November 2012

A friend through school requested a cake for her son's 5th Birthday Party.  The theme was Skylanders.  We decided on a cake that looks like the Portal used in the game.

The original thought was to put some of the actual characters from the game on top.  However, I prefer to make cakes that are 100% edible.  So I went in search of a character that I thought I could  reproduce out of fondant.  I came up with Wrecking Ball.
The real Skylander is on the Right, and the 100%
edible fondant reproduction on the left.

The party kept increasing in size and so did the amount of cake needed.  In the end we had 2 - 8in, 3tier cakes, as well as 18 filled cupcakes.  All were made in chocolate, with a chocolate pudding filling and Vanilla Buttercream icing, Marshmallow Fondant was made to top the cakes.

All this was done a midst a main level/kitchen reno.  We are living in chaos right now, so it was a nice way to get away from it all for a bit and focus on what I love to do.

The finished products.....

My current chaos....

...and it just keeps getting worse.  The backsplash comes out next

October 2012
I was asked to come up with a cake for a baby shower my Mother-in-law was hosting for her nephew and his wife.  The cake was a real hit, and looked great alongside all the pink sandwiches that were made for the event.
I unfortunately missed most of the shower because Carter was chosen to participate in the Lasting Impressions event down at the Burlington Pier, but I did make it for the last 1/2 hour or so and got to meet beautiful baby Allanah.

A 3-tier Golden Cake with Pink Vanilla Buttercream;
The baby head and the top of the present were made of Styrofoam covered in fondant.

Here are also a few pictures of Carter's Special Day down at the Pier.
Carter was one of 7 children chosen to leave their
handprints on the Pier

The inked handprints will be used in several forms and transfered onto
a display which will be a part of the final design of the Pier.
Each of the 7 kids inserted a bolt and signed a
steel plate which will eventually be
encased in cement in the Pier.
As a memento he received a 'Gold Bolt'
He was pretty excited, but I don't think he quite grasps how awesome it will be, when he is able
to bring his own kids and eventually grandkids down to the Pier to see it.

Monster High

Since I have two boys who are into sports, cars and playfighting, I am rarely exposed to dolls, princesses or for that matter, anything pink.  I have learned to love and embrace all those boyisms, but I find it fun when I get to delve into the world of little girls.  I secretly get excited when I know my hands will turn pink instead of blue from making my Marshmallow Fondant.

I was recently asked to make a Monster High Themed Cake for one of Carter's friends at school.
Time to educate myself on all things 'Monster High', I'll be honest and say I had never heard of it before.

I quickly found out they are a line of fashion dolls that are related to or are offspring of famous monsters such as Dracula, Frankenstein, Medusa and Zombies.

While researching I saw a lot of pink, white and black; lots of plaid; the logos; and because of the monster theme I thought of bats and fangs.
Off to the drawing board...I was excited to come up with a plan for a sweet little 7 year old girl.

THE PLAN

The fondant toppers usually need a few weeks to dry so that they will retain their shape and be stiff enough to pick up.

 THE CAKE
This particular cake was a 3 layer Double Chocolate cake with Pink Vanilla Buttercream Frosting and a Chocolate Pudding Center.   Everything was edible except for the 2 wires holding up the fangs and the bat, as well as the straws the wires were sitting in.

Carter's 7th - Angry Birds Party (2012)

This was Carter's first year to have a party with School Friends.  We had 17 kids at our house for an afternoon party.  Thankfully we had a lot of activities and planned to keep them busy.
The party was a huge success, and after everyone left it was time to clean up and get ready for Round 2.  The following day we hosted a family party.

I couldn't have been happier with how this cake turned out.  A lot of late nights went into making the birds and the pigs. Everything on the cake is 100% edible except for the wires holding up the Blue birds
The cupcakes were for the Friends party and the cake was saved for Day2

We served a lot of themed appetizers such as Chocolate Bird nests, Angry Bird  Food (Gummy  Worms), Angry Bird Poop (Peanut M&M's). Fried Egg Gummies, Bird Seed (Sunflower Seeds), and Pigs in Blankets.

We had a ton of activities, but the favourite by far was the Life Sized Angry Birds Game.  I made a Slingshot using a Water Balloon Launcher.  The kids (and adults) used foam balls to try and knock down the box and pig structure further out in the yard.

When they weren't in line to use the Slingshot, the kids had fun  building and re-building the box structure

The kids were split up into teams to play most of the games
We also had painting, bowling, bean bag toss, and a few other games using  Angry Bird Balls

Cakes, Cakes and More Cakes!

May until July of 2012 were extremely busy in cake world.  It started with an order from the Halton Childcare Association, for their Providers Appreciation Night.  Then word got around my son's school that I make cakes, and I received a bunch of orders through there.  Add in a Baby Shower for my close friend Vicky, my nieces 5th Birthday, my nephews 7th Birthday, and to top it all off...Carter's 7th Birthday -  it made for a busy few months.
